Although, compared with some of the distances I've been covering over the past few weeks, 11km hardly feels like a long run at all. That's probably a good sign that the training has been doing its job. With Beachy Head Half Marathon now just around the corner, the focus is shifting away from building mileage and towards arriving at the start line feeling fit and ready.

I planned a route that took me up the steep initial climb towards Cissbury Ring, gaining around 100 metres of elevation, before looping back towards Worthing and finishing along the promenade.

The first interval was always going to be the tricky one. It incorporated most of the climb, making the target pace a bit of an ask. I knew I'd have to work for it, but my legs felt strong from the outset, and I managed to get within just a few seconds of the target. I'll happily take that, especially given the gradient.

Once the climb was behind me, I felt confident about the remaining intervals. The route was mostly downhill on the way back, with a little assistance from the wind, so the conditions were much more favourable for hitting the faster progressive paces. The main thing was making sure I didn't push too hard on the climb and leave my legs with nothing for the rest of the session. Thankfully, that wasn't an issue.

All in all, this was a very satisfactory way to finish the block. The progressive session went well, the legs responded when asked to work harder, and there were no dramas along the way.

There are just two short runs planned for next week before race day, so the hard work is largely done. Now it's a case of keeping the legs ticking over, allowing the body to recover and resisting the temptation to squeeze in any extra training just for the sake of it. After weeks of long runs, hill reps, tempo sessions and plenty of easy miles, it's satisfying to reach this point feeling positive about where things stand.

All eyes on Beachy Head now.

Beachy Head Half Marathon 2026 Training Block - Week 10/11 Today's 11km progressive run marked the final long run of this training block.
