FEATURED ARTICLE – In-Ter-Dance At Sterns 1990-1993

The Cycles of life go round, In-ter-Dance at Sterns has gone full circle, time for a change!!!

In 1990 sterns saw change!!! After the initial media outcry brought about by the M25 raves and illegal warehouse parties. driven by the explosion of house and dance music, and combined with the eagerness of the youth to party all night, a new breed of promoter emerged. Mensa was one of these and from small one-off events in Bognor Regis, formed In-Ter-Dance. With the help of a Government Enterprise Allowance and the finding of Sterns, the ideal venue to take the illegality away from the initial house music dance parties, a south coast scene started to emerge. After a successful one-off all night party in the June of 1990, January 1991 saw the beginning of a once monthly all-night party at sterns, and with the initial co-operation of police and council Sterns achieved national acclaim and became one of the safest places to party in the country. This also alleviated the local problem of illegal parties and in the August of ‘91 the council and police asked the then licencee (Mr Derek Talbot) if he would be prepared to hold weekly all night events. Of course, we jumped at the chance and the rest of ‘91 was certainly a tear to be remembered. So far so good!

Everything that becomes successful attracts attention and in 1992 sterns attracted some bad attention. The first of two police operations that would result in a media panic suggesting that Sterns was the main focal point for drugs on the south coast. After this time things got progressively worse. The all-night licence was withdrawn and we were back to two o’clock causing problems with the local community with a string of complaints regarding the noise of our patrons congregating wherever trying to find somewhere to carry on partying, none of which had been the case when it was all night and people were going home satisfied. A dilemma that was not of our making.

Well, I started writing this just before heading off to Sterns on what would probably be the last time In-Ter-Dance would grace its walls. Now some time later, after what turned out to be a very highly charged, emotionally uplifting experience, bordering on revolution. A unity was achieved thats message was freedom. Freedom from social hypocrisy, freedom of choice and finally freedom to party. Music and dance combined, help us to express our innermost hopes and fears. We dance to rid ourselves of the confusion that prevails on a global level. we dance to forget!

But let us not forget Sterns, for change is coming soon. We must look to the past with view to the future and adapt, not conform, more to find a common ground. We speak the same language after ali. So lets talk! We must for if the social divide between the generation of then, becomes much wider. Just think what could happen when in twenty to thirty years time it’s our turn to take control. That sort of drastic change could be the beginning of a beautiful and positive world for all of us to live on.

So fear not people. For this is not the end, this is the beginning. For life goes in cycles, and we’re just about to start a new revolution!!!

FEATURED ARTICLE – KNITE FORCE

Adrian H is in Essex this week with someone who has been there, done it, and is destined to do it again. An eight hour joke (to him) and 56 quid with Mr Tom and Nick Arnold did enough to give him national and international chart success and gave him the contacts to do what he wanted to do in the first place….run his own label… Mr H talks to LUNA-C.

The name isn’t as instantly recognisable as Smartees or Sesame Street of which Luna-C is the the third part, and they’re still about and will soon be putting tracks out under the name of ECHORA. ‘The door you get into the music business is not necessarily the house you live in’ This is the view that Luna-C took with the fame and offers that came with having a successful record to his name. I’m glad to say that it did not deter him from his original plan setting up his own label.

Knite Force records is run by Luna-C with help from Spenka, Poozie and Bully along with about 18 others all with their own part to play in the label, eg the artist (Bex) Techno specialist, breakbeat specialist, happy hardcore lovers, darklovers and generally to put their views and ideas forward to benefit the label. Knite Force are a very close unit, with artistes including Alke-D, Phuture Primitive, Evolution Crew, Poozie and more, chilling around Luna-C’s Loughton house most nights. They say if they were to hear a tape with an original style, not a copied one, they would consider putting it out. Luna-C believes in discipline and acceptance eg ‘not liking a record but knowing that it’s good, thus not immediately coating off or labelling a group as “shit” because they do things differently’.

One thing that is clear to see from all the Knite Force crew is that they are all characters with their own personalities (none too serious) and that without going around giving it with oversized egos. They’re really enjoying what they’re doing.

Tracks out at the moment include the Alke-D remixes (the one with Colonel Abrahams) and the Poozie & Cru-l-t EP which I highly recommend for your record boxes. Luna-C would like to add a lot of thanks and respect to Suburban Bass because without them he would have been really in a mess (check the hairstyle!)

FEATURED ARTICLE – BASS SELECTIVE

Adrian H is in Kings Cross this week, not to find a new girlfriend (though he could do with one) not even to look at Bagleys where he will be playing on the 28th, but to sit on the roof of Sounds of the Underground Records with a benson and the sun beating on his face, he was joined by some down to earth but sometimes quite deep geezers. With the scene set and the tape rolling he found out about BASS SELECTIVE.

Bass Selective are T.Power, Sandman, Nine Bar and Submaster One. The four met through raving. T.Power and Sandman had known each other since they were kids and had a totally urban upbringing, listening to hip-hop and old school, unlike Nine Bar and Submaster One who were as T-Power put it “living in fields and driving tractors” with the sounds of Def Metal and Hawkwind blasting through their walkmans.

The four put together their musical interest and influences and came up with ‘Get A Little Stupid’, and ‘Make Me Rush’, the buzz of the first EP smoothly paved the way for the Expansions EP which includes the anthem ‘Blow Out Part 2’ which although a huge club toon, poor distribution and bad timing with It’s release hampered it’s success.

Although Bass Selective’s style is at the moment on the ‘happy hardcore’ tip they maintain that they’re not a breakbeat group saying “we’re going to be spreading to ambient, progressive and back to our roots with some hip-hop”.

They have just formed a production company called ‘Friendly Elephant’ from which they are going to produce all these different styles which they vow will surprise some people.

SENSITIVE DEPENDENCE ON INITIAL CONDITIONS is not just the title of the new EP it’s the way they live their lives “every action causes a reaction e.g all your actions indirectly affect someone else in the world, so be aware of your actions”. They do not intend to set themselves goals because If you reach a goal, you set yourself another, they want to live life in a spiral and not a circle. how ever they live their lives you can bet they will be making some original music which I am looking forward to hearing. Bass Selective have P.A’d nationwide, and are PA’ing at the Labrynth Warehouse on the 28th. A shout to Nigel Mack & Vixen and the Spirals really impress me.
