Issue 43 – Ravescene

Ravescene Magazeen #43 (Sep ’93) spotlights Knite Force and Luna-C, highlighting their collaborative label, innovative releases, and dedication to originality in hardcore, breakbeat, and techno music.

FEATURED ARTICLE – KNITE FORCE

Adrian H is in Essex this week with someone who has been there, done it, and is destined to do it again. An eight hour joke (to him) and 56 quid with Mr Tom and Nick Arnold did enough to give him national and international chart success and gave him the contacts to do what he wanted to do in the first place….run his own label… Mr H talks to LUNA-C.

The name isn’t as instantly recognisable as Smartees or Sesame Street of which Luna-C is the the third part, and they’re still about and will soon be putting tracks out under the name of ECHORA. ‘The door you get into the music business is not necessarily the house you live in’ This is the view that Luna-C took with the fame and offers that came with having a successful record to his name. I’m glad to say that it did not deter him from his original plan setting up his own label.

Knite Force records is run by Luna-C with help from Spenka, Poozie and Bully along with about 18 others all with their own part to play in the label, eg the artist (Bex) Techno specialist, breakbeat specialist, happy hardcore lovers, darklovers and generally to put their views and ideas forward to benefit the label. Knite Force are a very close unit, with artistes including Alke-D, Phuture Primitive, Evolution Crew, Poozie and more, chilling around Luna-C’s Loughton house most nights. They say if they were to hear a tape with an original style, not a copied one, they would consider putting it out. Luna-C believes in discipline and acceptance eg ‘not liking a record but knowing that it’s good, thus not immediately coating off or labelling a group as “shit” because they do things differently’.

One thing that is clear to see from all the Knite Force crew is that they are all characters with their own personalities (none too serious) and that without going around giving it with oversized egos. They’re really enjoying what they’re doing.

Tracks out at the moment include the Alke-D remixes (the one with Colonel Abrahams) and the Poozie & Cru-l-t EP which I highly recommend for your record boxes. Luna-C would like to add a lot of thanks and respect to Suburban Bass because without them he would have been really in a mess (check the hairstyle!)

Issue 42 – Ravescene

Ravescene Magazeen 42 (Aug ’93) dives into Bass Selective, the quartet T.Power, Sandman, Nine Bar, and Submaster One. From happy hardcore roots to upcoming ambient and progressive experiments, their new EP Sensitive Dependence on Initial Conditions promises fresh sounds.

FEATURED ARTICLE – BASS SELECTIVE

Adrian H is in Kings Cross this week, not to find a new girlfriend (though he could do with one) not even to look at Bagleys where he will be playing on the 28th, but to sit on the roof of Sounds of the Underground Records with a benson and the sun beating on his face, he was joined by some down to earth but sometimes quite deep geezers. With the scene set and the tape rolling he found out about BASS SELECTIVE.

Bass Selective are T.Power, Sandman, Nine Bar and Submaster One. The four met through raving. T.Power and Sandman had known each other since they were kids and had a totally urban upbringing, listening to hip-hop and old school, unlike Nine Bar and Submaster One who were as T-Power put it “living in fields and driving tractors” with the sounds of Def Metal and Hawkwind blasting through their walkmans.

The four put together their musical interest and influences and came up with ‘Get A Little Stupid’, and ‘Make Me Rush’, the buzz of the first EP smoothly paved the way for the Expansions EP which includes the anthem ‘Blow Out Part 2’ which although a huge club toon, poor distribution and bad timing with It’s release hampered it’s success.

Although Bass Selective’s style is at the moment on the ‘happy hardcore’ tip they maintain that they’re not a breakbeat group saying “we’re going to be spreading to ambient, progressive and back to our roots with some hip-hop”.

They have just formed a production company called ‘Friendly Elephant’ from which they are going to produce all these different styles which they vow will surprise some people.

SENSITIVE DEPENDENCE ON INITIAL CONDITIONS is not just the title of the new EP it’s the way they live their lives “every action causes a reaction e.g all your actions indirectly affect someone else in the world, so be aware of your actions”. They do not intend to set themselves goals because If you reach a goal, you set yourself another, they want to live life in a spiral and not a circle. how ever they live their lives you can bet they will be making some original music which I am looking forward to hearing. Bass Selective have P.A’d nationwide, and are PA’ing at the Labrynth Warehouse on the 28th. A shout to Nigel Mack & Vixen and the Spirals really impress me.
