FEATURED ARTICLE – Shaggy & Breeze

Two brothers, two sounds, one set.

There is no hype about Shaggy & Breeze. They’ve worked slowly and steadily to build up their reputations to the point where they’re regularly playing major clubs and events up and down the country. When we talked to them we were struck by both similarities and differences. In looks they both wear their hair long, Shaggy fair and Breeze dark. Shaggy’s the elder by three years and acts as the spokesman, but Breeze definately holds his own opinions. When playing out they don’t work out their set beforehand, but take a selection of records to suit any crowd. They pride themselves on reacting to the ravers both as to what they play and to who plays. Breeze plays more bass, Shaggy more bouncy and dancey. They also chuck in lots of their own bits, like the Speaking clock and crowd noises, which is partly in reaction to what they perceive as the blandness of much of the music that is being issued. Quantity, rather than quality is how they see some record companies output. They feel that this is reflected in todays events which can be totally predictable, compared to the old days, when you never knew how the night would tum out.

We last saw them playing at Reincarnation, where Breeze played the majority of the rocking set, and their MC, MC II Reel, whipped up the crowd all the way.

Their future plans include more vinyl, but not necessarily under their own name, and to carry on doing just what they do best.

Issue 11 – Ravescene

Ravescene Magazeen #11 (Mar ’92) goes underground with Spiral Tribe, pioneers of free hardcore techno raves for up to 15,000 ravers. Also packed with UK and international rave listings, from Ravescene Party III to Storm Rave and Future — Rockin’ the Boat 92 with no rules, just music.

FEATURED ARTICLE – Spiral Tribe

Spiral Tribe have been around for a while organizing free raves up and down the country, often at the festivals. They don’t promote their events at all, but have managed to pull up to 15,000 ravers at a time. The music’s hardcore techno all the way, and only stops when every one has gone home, on average 72 hours after the start. Spiral Tribe live by the ‘ Terra-Technic’, in synch with the pulse of the planet and the Universe. Their message is in the music, the music of the future, the music with a hard cutting edge. The costs are met by people giving their time and talents freely, anonymously. Just enough is made by passing the hat and selling refreshments, Any money over is turned into music, via The Spiral Tribe label.

Think of dancing in a field, under the stars, grass underfoot and no organisers, no security, no attitude, just thousands of like-minded people under the influence of the music, the strobes and the smoke.

The Roundhouse, The Old School House, Camberwell bus garage and Amsterdam are now in the past. The future holds Sound System City, the gathering of the Tribes for the Summer Solstice, and an event somewhere, somehow, every weekend.
