Issue 9 – Ravescene

Ravescene Magazeen #9 (Feb ’92) features DJ Seduction on breaking through with “Hardcore Heaven” and his rise from the Dungeons to the national charts. Packed with rave listings for Showtime ’92, Living Dream, and Euphoria, this issue keeps it Safe as House and full of hardcore spirit.

FEATURED ARTICLE – SEDUCTION

Seduction is one of the lucky few to whom mixing came easily. He started playing about 4 years ago and was a regular at Dungeons in the early days. He is currently with the same stable as Carl Cox and Top Buzz and his track ‘Hardcore Heaven’ on ffrr has reached No. 26 in the national charts. This track has been around for some time on white label and was purchased by many, who knew it as ‘Here it Comes’. We asked Seduction where his future direction lay.

RS: Do you intend to carry on DJing?

S: Definately — and where possible to combine it with PA’s. I should have the new track out in six weeks and will be doing my first PA at Elevation on March 7th. I spent six months in Miami last year, where the scene was very commercial house, but it is possible that I may go back again, and to Tenerife, this year.

RS: Are you likely to be playing any garage?

S: No. Garage is fine to play at home, but not out. You can’t rave to garage.

RS: Is it harder now for young DJ’s to get started ?

S: Yes, as there are so many good DJ’s about and the promoters in many cases seem to have distanced themselves from the ravers. The competition is so intense that they are more concerned with the pulling power than the standard of the playing.

Issue 6 – Ravescene

Ravescene Magazeen #6 (Jan ’92) dives into rave health with Claire Henderson’s feature “Nutrition & Illicit Drugs” — a guide to staying balanced amid the weekend highs. Plus listings for Dreamscape, Vision On, Rezerection, and more. Safe as House for the new year.

FEATURED ARTICLE – Nutrition & Illicit Drugs

By Claire Henderson

As a raver, do you ever find yourself getting tired and snappy during the week and dreading the eventual end of the weekend come down? As well as a lack of sleep, all of the above can be attributed to a depletion of the vitamin and mineral content in your body, and the 3 neurotransmitters Serotonin, Dopamine and Noradrenaline, which create the high on drugs. Trytophan and Phenylalanine are both essential amino acids present in MDMA and ‘Ecstasy’. Phenylalinine is a chemical that transmits its signals between the nerve cells and the brain. In the body it is turned into Noradrenaline and

Dopamine, excitatory transmitters, which promote alertness and vitality.

What it can do for you? Reduce hunger, increase sexual interest, improve memory and mental alertness, alleviate depression.

Best natural sources – All protein rich foods, bread stuffing, soy products, cottage cheese, dry skimmed milk, almonds, peanuts, lima beans, pumpkin and sesame seeds.

Trytophan is used by the brain along with vitamin B6, Niacin (or Niacinamide) and magnesium to produce Serotonin.

Best natural sources – All protein rich foods, cottage cheese, milk, meat, fish, turkey, bananas, dried dates and peanuts. All vitamins and minerals are important, as they are our life blood enabling our bodies to function properly and protect against disease. As a raver, you must be getting a proper vitamin and mineral supplement, as most ravers not on supplements are continuously depleted of them, which in the long run could lead to premature balding, heart disease, lack of concentration, diminished resistance to cancer, memory loss and so on. Also it is possible that continuously low

Dopamine levels in the body can lead to Parkinsons disease. This is not scaremongering, it is reality. We all know at the end of the day that if you play, you pay. This doesn’t have to be the case if you take care of yourself – get enough sleep, take vitamins and minerals, eat well and drink loads of milk, vitamin C and water.

Recommended supplements. High potency vitamin and mineral (time release prefered) vitamin C, 1000mg with Bioflavonoids. vitamin E, 400IU (dry form). One of each with breakfast and again with evening meal (when necessary).

For the morning after (as well as the supplements above) L – Tryptophan (which comes in tablets of 250mg to 667mg strengths). It should be taken with juice or water, no milk or other protein. (Single doses exceeding 2grams are not recommended). Phenylalanine (available in 250 to 500mg tablets).

This should be taken between meals, but again with water or juice (no protein), but not if you are hypertensive or have a heart condition as it can raise blood pressure.

It should be noted however that supplements are not a substitute for food.

Issue 1 – Ravescene

The debut Ravescene Magazeen (Oct ’91) features DJ Loft Groover on breaking into the rave scene, plus classic event listings like Raindance and Showtime ’91. A raw snapshot of early UK rave culture — underground, defiant, and unforgettable.

FEATURED ARTICLE – LOFT GROOVER

Things are really moving now for Loft Groover, his name’s on every flyer and with a Saturday night residency at The Rocket, he’s had no choice but to give up his day job at Dancefloor Records. We interviewed him to try to find out why he’s only now getting the attention he deserves.

R.S. What led you into house music?

L.G. House itself, I listened to Jazz and Blues when I was a kid, because that’s what I heard at home, and then I got heavily into pop. I heard some house before it really started here, on tapes a friend in America sent me, but then one Tuesday night I tumed on the radio and Jazzy M was playing House — I just thought that this 1s what I’ve been waiting for. So I sold all my Jazz and Soul records and now I’ve got a loft room full of House records.

R.S. Is that where your name comes from?

L.G. No, I’ve always had it because since I was a kid cos I’ve always had a room at the top of the House. Even now my bedroom’s an attic room.

R.S. How did you get started as a D.J.?

L.G. I started by mixing some tapes to take on holiday with a friend called Dave, and then we were thrown in the deep end and given our first job in the West End with Danny Rampling and in those days he was The Man. Then I started doing Carwash with Fabio and Grooverider. They used to warm up for me. I used to get such a good response that I turned down the small gigs, waiting for the big ones. 18 months later I was still waiting. I got shocked into pushing myself forward more when I saw a video of Fabio and Grooverider and realised that they were top of the heap.

You have to push yourself in this business because there is a lot of bitchiness between D.J.s which makes it harder to get started. You have to keep improving too. The best buzz I get is when the people stop and can’t believe what they’re hearing. Anybody can play all the commercial House and keep them dancing all night. It’s a bit harder to blow their minds. Commercial house just isn’t my style. I could probably have got where I am now a lot quicker by sticking to the same tunes that everyone else plays but I feel that if 6 D.J.’s are playing in a night, then there should be 6 different types of House for the different stages of the night. Its taking the piss if you hear the same record 6 times at the same rave!

R.S. Where do you get your records from?

L.G. I buy most of my records in Southend and Reading. They keep a box for me of all the new stuff that comes into the country and I listen to it all every week. I go over to Belgium most weeks  and pick up stuff there, but I’m more into Bntish and American now.

R.S. What do you see yourself doing in a years time?

L.G. Still playing, but spending more time in the studio. I’ve done 3 tracks. One just last week that’s going to press in a few days. I do it just for the fun of it!
